Speaker, pursuant to the provisions of Standing Order 44(2)(c), I rise to request a statement from the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Agriculture and Livestock regarding the position of the leasing programme for state-owned sugar farms. The Kenya sugar subsector plays a vital role in agriculture and the Kenyan economy. The industry contributes to food security, employment creation, regional development and improved livelihoods for over 8 million Kenyans. The Kenya Sugar Industry comprises 16 milling factories with an installed capacity of 41,000 tonnes per day, five of which are public- owned.
