I have one minute to support the Sessional Paper on the mining policy. In my support, I must state that Kenya has never had a mining policy in spite of having a few statutes that govern our mining laws. I believe that some of these are statutes that we inherited, possibly from the colonial government. They are quite anachronistic and, therefore, this is the right time to formulate a policy that will govern the mining industry in our country. I support this again because I come from Tharaka Constituency which is one of the constituencies in Kenya which is very well-endowed with minerals. In Tharaka, you will find iron ore, copper, gemstones, rubies and other precious stones. Once a policy such as this is put in place, I am certain that we will develop the industry and this will benefit the people of Kenya, in general, and in particular, the people of Tharaka."}
