Temporary Deputy Chair, I wish to give the House a background in regard to Section 3 of the Community Service Act on which the amendment in the Statute Laws (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill seeks to amend. Section 3 of the Act gives the courts the power to issue community service orders to persons of an offense punishable with imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years, with or without the option of a fine. Second, imprisonment for a term exceeding three years but for which the court determines a term of imprisonment for three years or less with or without the option of a fine to be appropriate. Now, the intention of the new subsection 9 as introduced in the amendment Bill."}
