"content": "Thank you, Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, as I mentioned earlier, I just wanted to confirm from the outset that it is true that this sugar issue did not start yesterday. I happen to have worked for the KNTC for a while. Indeed, we have had these issues of sugar importation since 1991. One wonders why, all of a sudden, it looks like we have just made a new discovery. Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, importation of sugar is killing our industries. Every year when long rains came, there was pretence to import sugar in the country and it has not stopped. Currently, the Committee is looking at issues of trade and inquiries on the retail outlets. We have met the Anti-Counterfeit Agency (ACA), the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, for us to stop corruption and entry of sugar and other goods that are not certified, the agencies must work together. I request that we come up with a proposal to force the agencies, that is, KRA, ACA and KEBS, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), to work together to protect us from this kind of importation. Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, as I conclude, it is not only sugar that is imported illegally into the country. Rice is also being imported. I will not be surprised to hear one day that we are importing contaminated rice. As we move on, we will---"
