Functions:

  • The Ministry of Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs is responsible for : policies governing legal matters, administration of justice, constitutional matters, anti-corruption strategies, integrity and ethics, human rights and social justice, legal education, legal aid and advisory services and elections.
  • It also exercises oversight over three government parastatals: the Kenya National Human Rights Commission, Kenya School of Law and Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission.
  • The ministry also coordinates the Governance Justice, Law & Order Sector (GJLOS) programme.

2. Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Functions:

  • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs oversees Kenya’s foreign policy, State and official visits, protocol and consular matters and provides services to Kenyans in the Diaspora.
  • It also maintains relations with bilateral and multilateral agencies as well as international and regional organisations.
  • The ministry establishes and maintains Kenya’s Embassies Abroad and oversees relations with Foreign Missions in Kenya.
  • The Ministry is also serves as the custodian of treaties, conventions and agreements Kenya enters into.
  • Additionally, it accords and maintains diplomatic privileges and immunities plus oversees State and official Visits.
  • The foreign affairs ministry also represents Kenya in Joint Commissions with other Countries, peace Initiatives and in Pan-African and Commonwealth affairs.

3. Ministry of Agriculture

Functions:

  • The Ministry of Agriculture oversees the development and implementation of agricultural and national food policies and related services like crop production and marketing, pests and disease control, agricultural extension and phytosanitary services.
  • Under this docket, it also exercises oversight over 23 government parastatals that contribute to Kenya’s agricultural development. Functions:

  • Ministry of Cooperative Development promotes the development of a vibrant co-operative sector in Kenya through the establishment of a policy and legal framework that supports sustainable socio -economic development .

5. Ministry for the Development of Northern Kenya and other Arid Lands

Functions:

  • The Ministry for the Development of Northern Kenya and other Arid Lands was established in 2008 in recognition that the region had been development-wise marginalised since Kenya’s independence.
  • The ministry is tasked with the formulation and operationalization of the region’s development policy which covers: infrastructure, planning of townships along main roads, livestock keeping and related industries, water supply provision, natural resources management, mineral resources exploration, tourism, irrigation and tapping of solar and wind energy.
  • It also advises the government on programmes and projects that need to be fast-tracked in the region. It advises the government on how to improve livestock marketing. It oversees the Arid Lands Resource Management Project.

6. Ministry of East African Community

Functions:

  • The Ministry of East African Community is responsible for the coordination of EAC activities like: finance, trade and customs, political affairs, legal matters, infrastructure and natural resources management, tourism, education, science and technology.

7. Ministry of Education

Functions: - The Ministry of Education co-ordinates and promotes the provision of quality basic education at the primary and secondary school levels as contribution towards sustainable development. - It also ensures provision of the requisite training to education personnel and conducts research to make sure Kenya attains the 'Education for All (EFA)' goals by 2015.

8. Ministry of Energy

Functions: - The Ministry of Energy facilitates provision of clean, sustainable, affordable, reliable and secure energy for national development while protecting the environment. - It oversees the development and implementation of Energy Policy; hydropower, geothermal and renewable energy exploration as well as the development, trade and marketing of petroleum products. 9. Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources

Functions:

  • The Ministry of Environment and Natural resources oversees the development and execution of environmental, mining and forestry policy.
  • It also keeps an inventory of Kenya’s natural resources and ensures their protection.
  • Mineral exploration and mining plus the development of forests, re-afforestation and agro-forestry also fall under this docket. Water catchment area conservation, control and protection are part of the ministry’s mandate.
  • The Ministry also oversees the management of six parastatals tasked to manage specific components of the sector: Lake Victoria Environment Management Programme (LVEMP); National Environment Management Authority(NEMA), Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), Kenya Meteorological Department and the Kenya Meteorological Training College.

10. Ministry of Fisheries Development

Functions - The Ministry of Fisheries Development formulates and reviews fisheries policy, oversees licensing, and the management of marine and fresh water fisheries. - It also promotes development of aquaculture and the commercialization of the sector including formation of fisheries groups for local fishermen. - Promotion of fish quality assurance, value addition and marketing also falls under this docket including Marine and Fisheries Research.

11. Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife

Functions:

  • The Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife formulates and oversees the implementation of the forestry and wildlife conservation policies.
  • Conservation of water catchment areas and the national wildlife heritage along with the protection and development of forests through re-afforestation and agroforestry are some of its core tasks.
  • Like other ministries it also has oversight over several government parastatals which include Kenya Forestry Services, Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Wildlife Clubs of Kenya and the Marine Parks.

12. Ministry of Gender and Children Affairs

Functions - The Ministry of Gender, Children & Social Development formulates Kenya’s policies affecting its three focus areas and ensures gender mainstreaming into national development plans is done. - It oversees the management of the Women’s Enterprise Development Fund and provision of social welfare to vulnerable groups like children, orphans, the disabled and the elderly.

14. Ministry of Housing

15. Ministry of Industrialisation

19. Ministry of Livestock Development

Functions: - This ministry formulates, implements and monitors Livestock development policy, coordinates programmes and manages the control of diseases and pests. - This docket also includes the regulation and management of quality control of inputs, produce and products including the facilitation of extension services. - It conducts livestock research and promotes the development of emerging livestock such as crocodiles and ostriches. - Information Management is also one of its core tasks as a contribution to the monitoring and management of food security.

21. Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development

22. Ministry of Public Health & Sanitation

Functions: - This Ministry formulates and oversees the implementation of public health and sanitation policy. - All preventive and promotive health services also fall under its docket including community health services and reproductive health education. The ministry also checks food quality and hygiene and oversees quarantine administration. - It has oversight of all sanitation and public health services including the government chemist, dispensaries and health centres. - The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and Radiation Protection Board fall under its docket and is a member of the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA) and the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) boards.

23. Ministry of Public Works

Functions: - Ministry of Public Works formulates and oversees the public works policy implementation, plans public works projects, develops and maintains public buildings and keeps an inventory of government property. - This ministry also provides mechanical and electrical building services and also co-ordinates of procurement of common user items by government ministries. - It also has oversight over the Kenya Building Research Centre (KBRC), registration of architects, quantity surveyors, contractors, consultants for buildings and civil works plus material suppliers. 26. Ministry of Special Programmes

28. Ministry of Trade

Functions: - The Ministry of Trade formulates trade development policy, promotes retail and wholesale markets, develops small businesses and manages international trade affairs. It is also expected to support the private sector while ensuring fair trade practices are observed and consumers protected.
