"content": " Thank you, Hon. Speaker. Pursuant to Standing Order 44(2)(c), I wish to request for a statement from the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Co-operatives with regard to the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in Kiambu and, particularly, in Githunguri Constituency. Over the last few decades, the dairy industry in Kenya has witnessed phenomenal growth. Kiambu County is among the regions that are well known for milk production and it is home to several dairy processors. Livestock farming is a predominant economic activity which contributes to over 17.4 per cent of the county’s income. The county is the lead producer of milk in the country, with over 350 million litres annually. Dairy cattle farming is done both in large and small scale, mainly for commercial purposes. Growth in this sub-sector has been encouraged by a ready urban market in Thika, Ruiru, Kiambu and Nairobi, and the availability of local food processing factories. However, dairy farming calls for a lot of attention in handling the animals. Challenges The electronic version of the Official Hansard Report is for information purposesonly.
