"content": "We know that teachers play a big role. When we see the fights between the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), it is not good for this country. I would like to appeal to both sides or whoever is behind it, to solve that problem so that our teachers can have a union or constitutional commission to represent them. The constitutional commission should not be seen to be fighting teachers so that they are brought down. We should use the World Teachers Day to ensure that our teachers enjoy their profession. In fact, teachers can be instrumental in bringing what I call a national ethos in Kenya. One of the things we lack is an appropriate national ethos in Kenya. In fact, it is more fundamental than constitutional amendments to have a national ethos. In Britain, for example, they do not have a constitution, but they go by traditions and customs. I believe that teachers can be used, when they are properly remunerated, to play the role they used to play because we all look up to teachers for guidance. They can play a big role to have the right type of national ethos in this country. With those few remarks, because of brevity of time, I thank you for giving me this opportunity to speak."
