"content": "In response to addressing the acute shortage, if we had taken that path and employed in the last financial year ending 30th June, we would have employed 12,500 teachers. If that had taken place, in this new financial year, we would also have employed another 12,500, making a total of 25,000. If you reduce that 25,000 from the current shortage of 66,000 teachers, it would have been down to above 30,000. In the next three years, through the Medium Term Expenditure programme, we should be able to clear the backlog and come up level. If the policy was quite clear, we would have been able to reduce the shortage of teachers within the next three years. The economy will be able to absorb it and we should be able to move forward without any difficulty. As I said earlier, I am open, willing and ready to discuss within 24 hours with the teachers. I am also at the same time pursuing this through the Government line and the Cabinet. Again through this august House when the Budget of the Ministry will be discussed, you will have the opportunity to address yourselves to this issue. It is a concern to everybody; my Ministry and Members of Parliament of this House."
