"content": "(Prof. Saitoti): Thank you very much, Madam Temporary Deputy Speaker. It is, indeed, true that I was requested to make a Statement regarding the incident that took place on Sunday. On Tuesday, 15th June, 2010, hon. Khalwale stood on a point of order asking for a Ministerial Statement on the incident that occurred on Sunday, 13th June, 2010, at Uhuru Park which claimed the lives of six innocent Kenyans and left several others injured. The Member sought an explanation on what the Government is doing to restore sobriety over our nation and weighing in on perpetrators of the hate speeches and ethnic incitement. The Member also wanted to know what the Government is doing to ensure that the authors of the crime are apprehended before they spread their cowardly activities to other parts of the country and exclude the involvement of foreign involvement. On 13th June, 2010, a Christian Evangelical Rally was convened by Apostle James Ng’ang’a of Neno Evangelism Church with other churches at Uhuru Park Nairobi. The conveners had notified the police of the rally in accordance with the law and had paid the requisite fee to the Nairobi City Council for the use of the facility. The rally was attended by several leaders, among them politicians. Among the politicians were hon. William Ruto, the Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology; hon. Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, the Assistant Minister for Housing; hon. K. Kilonzo; hon. Julius Kones and hon. Peter Munyaka. It was also attended by church leaders. The Members of Parliament present attended the meeting between 3.00 p.m. and 5.00 p.m. The crusade progressed well, but as it was ending, three explosions occurred. The first explosion occurred at 6.45 p.m. and two other subsequent explosions occurred a few minutes afterwards in short intervals. After the explosion, 131 people were injured and were rushed to hospital by the police and well wishers.
