"content": "I was informed by the former Cabinet Secretary in charge of Agriculture that another crop, a food crop which is also a cash crop known as green grams ( ndengu ) which is widely grown in Tharaka, Ukambani and in other arid areas, is a scheduled crop. But I notice that it is not here. Although it was supposed to be gazetted as required by section 7, this was not done. I would like to inform the two honourable Members, that when we go to the Third Reading, I will be moving an amendment to ensure that ndengu or green grams are included in Part 1 as a crop with breeding program under compulsory certification because ndengu is famous in the country. I mean that in every plate of chapatti or rice, you have to have that menu of ndengu . It does not do very well in terms of marketing. The price is not very attractive but the fact remains that this is one of the greatest cash crops for Tharaka people, and people who live in semi-arid areas. It needs to be bred properly. It needs to be propagated and marketed properly so that the people of Tharaka, Mwingi North and Makueni can benefit from that very important crop in the country. So, I will be moving the amendment and I will be seeking the support of the House so that they can also schedule that crop amongst other cash crops."
