I appreciate. Hon. Speaker, pursuant to Standing Order No. 44(2) (c), I request for a Statement from the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Environment and Natural Resources regarding five miners who lost lives in Bushiangala Village, Ikolomani Constituency. Hon. Speaker, since independence, several mining shafts that were used were left active for exploitation in the Lirhanda Corridor in the Western region of the country. These mining shafts are mainly found in Lurambi, Shinyalu, Ikolomani and Khwisero constituencies. There are over 85,000 artisanal miners in the said region without access to technological capacity on mining matters forcing them to use unrefined, risk, hazardous and crude methods to extract gold."
