"content": "As my colleague, Didmus Barasa has said, fuel is cheaper in Busia, Uganda, than it is in Busia, Kenya. Many times, many trucks that pass through the border prefer to fuel in Uganda and make a return journey to this country. The high cost of fuel is dampening the economic and business spirit in this country. It is important at this particular time to relook at particularly how we tax petroleum products in this country. For many years, petroleum products were not vatable but the introduction of VAT in 2019 has continuously escalated the fuel prices. As the world economy rebounds after the COVID-19, we are likely to have higher costs of fuel in the international market and this will continue to disadvantage the small business operators, matatu operators and those in the transport sector. We hope the Committee will expedite and give us a workable formula to help Kenyans to have decent living standards."
