"content": "Mr. Speaker, Sir, I stand in support and solidarity with the Petitioner, Ms. Julia, on this matter of leave absence from work denied to women who have had the misfortune of miscarriage. It is true that the Employment Act is clear on maternity and paternity leave. According to the Act, parents who are blessed with children are given some sufficient time to celebrate and attend to the newborns. I am impressed by the thinking of this Petitioner that a mother who has miscarried would actually require a lot more time for both psychological and even medical attention. The prayer by this Petitioner is properly before this House. Perhaps, the time has come and since the Petition has been brought to the Senate and not the National Assembly, I challenge my colleagues that we take up this prayer and push for an amendment to the Employment Act to ensure that mothers who miscarry also benefit from maternity leave. The same should also be extended to the fathers, whose child has also died at birth or the man whose wife has had the misfortune of miscarriage. I fully support and hope that before winding up this Session of Parliament, we shall be able to come up with that simple but important amendment to the Employment Act to take care of those women. I thank you."
