    "content": " Thank you, Hon. Temporary Speaker, for giving me an opportunity to also take part in this debate. However, I feel like we are discussing two things in one. One is the issue of safety of GMOs or lack of it, and the second one is whether we should be importing maize at all, GMO or otherwise. We are all aware that this country is going through a fairly tough famine period as a result of depressed rainfall. My people in Tetu are going through the fifth season without sufficient rainfall, which has left them food insecure. This phenomenon has been replicated in a number of other places across our beautiful country. Therefore, food security is a very important issue. Hon. Temporary Speaker, what has come out clearly in this debate is that farmers in certain parts of the country have recorded a good harvest of maize, but they are not selling the produce because they do not believe that the prices that are being offered in the market are sufficient. It is important to say that, unless farming makes economic sense, we are staring at a very bleak future as a country. The average age of farmers is 60 years.
