"content": "For instance, in France it was very difficult and at one time Maximilien Robespierre introduced a new religion called ‘The Cult of the Supreme Being’ just to try and defeat the church but he was defeated. In America, it was in 1571 when they decided to completely exclude themselves from religion so as to allow religious actions to act. Before I go to our real challenge, even Jean Jacques Rousseau of the French Revolution believed that every man must be very free and freedom for everybody, but still he decried the extent to which religion should be given space. He thought that governments and states must have boundaries beyond which religion must not extend. Our real challenge lies in the laws we have. If you look at Article 32 of our Constitution, it gives immense powers to religions and forms of beliefs that any person may want to believe in. Every person has the right, either individually or in community with others, in public or in private, to manifest any religion or belief through worship, practice, teaching or observance, including observance of a day of worship. If you read the entire Article 32 it gives too much space for operation of religion and it even mentions any beliefs that that a person holds. I think this was a wake-up call. I mourn with the people and families of Kilifi especially the mothers and children who died because they did not know what their fathers believed in, and that their parents believed in a religion that was going to kill them. On my behalf and that of the people of Emuhaya, we want to mourn with the people of Kilifi and ask the authorities to take the quickest possible measure to bring that to an end."
