    "content": "Thank you, Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir. I rise pursuant to Standing Order No.53 (1) to seek a statement from the Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries regarding the impact of recent drought on the livestock industry in Kenya. In the Statement, the Committee should- (1) report on the impact of the recent drought on the livestock industry, stating its effect on local and national economies; (2) explain interventions in place to mitigate the effects of drought on the livestock sector in both the short and long term, spelling out immediate and sustainable interventions deployed to support the recovery of the sector from the effects of drought; (3) state measures in place by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and Fisheries and sector players to urgently facilitate affected families to restock cattle in order to minimize the negative effects of the drought and stabilize the beef supply chain; and, (4) explore the possibility of affordable access to credit by livestock owners and an emergency fund to be advanced by the Government to livestock owners to aid in mitigating current and future effects of drought in the livestock sector.
