"content": "We are also working to ensure that we transform the BMUs into co-operative societies in order to link them to financial institutions. Therefore, we have mapped out the entire country and identified 445 BMUs that need to be transformed into co-operative societies. For example, in the Lake region, in Migori, we are working around Suri, where we have a landing site. We have developed another landing site in Nyandhiwa in Homa Bay. We also have Mulukoba in Busia, Ogal and Asat in Kisumu and Wichlum and Lwanda KÓtieno in Siaya. We have identified these areas for basic value addition and we are working with the counties on those projects. In Lake Turkana, we are working with the Government of Netherlands because we also want to develop cooling systems for fishermen in Marsabit and Turkana. That project has a budget of around Kshs1.5 billion. We will work around it so that we give fishermen an opportunity for investment. We also have another programme. We are working with the counties on aquaculture. We have 15 counties in the lake, western and Mt. Kenya regions. Our aim is to develop our capacity in aquaculture. Soon we will be launching the Kabonyo/Kanyagwal Programme which will cost about Kshs1 billion. Once we launch it, we will enhance our capacity in aquaculture. We are also working with other partners on enhancing our presence in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Indian Ocean, so that we inspire our capacity in Tuna fishing. That is why we have the Liwatoni Project in Mombasa, so that it becomes a landing site for vessels that ply the trade in the deep sea. Alongside that, we have identified areas like Mokowe and Shimoni, where we are working with other agencies to develop fish processing. In Shimoni already, we have a Kshs2.6 billion fish port spearheaded by the KPA. We feel that will inspire investments. We are also sending our officers to Taita- Taveta County to look at their potential in Lake Chala and Lake Jipe."
