"content": "Hon. Deputy Speaker, Uasin Gishu, where you come from, and Trans Nzoia, are expecting a bumper harvest. Last week, as I traversed Nyeri County, I noticed that in Naromoru, Kieni Constituency, farmers had spread their maize by the roadside to dry. I am happy Hon. Wainaina is here. Those are some of the issues that this Bill is speaking to. It will ensure that farmers do not dry their maize in the sun by the roadside. Such a practice exposes grain and other crops to hazardous elements like lead, which is commonly found in motor vehicle exhaust systems. Lead gets embedded in the grain and that is how it ends up in our bodies. I must commend the Government for taking measures to ensure that when farmers produce maize it is dried in a safe and healthy environment. That way, Kenyans can be sure that the maize flour they buy from their local supermarket is safe for human consumption. Let me not belabour that point much because I had a hard task choosing the person to second this Bill. It is because it was processed by two committees. Hon. Pukose prevailed on me that it has more to do with health because it talks more about health safety. He requested that he seconds. Thus, I beg that he seconds. I also beg your indulgence, Hon Deputy Speaker, that you allow the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Agriculture and Livestock to contribute to the Bill because he is one of the major stakeholders. I beg to move and request Hon. Pukose to second."
