"content": "Thank you, Hon. Speaker, for this opportunity. I also thank my friend, Hon. Saney. There are two hospitals in my constituency whose roofs are made of asbestos. As Buuri community, we have petitioned the Cabinet Secretaries for Education and Health but nothing has been done. Our Deputy Speaker said that Kirinyaga County has the highest number of cancer cases. I dispute that statement and substitute it with the statement that Meru County has the highest number of cancer cases. If it is not in first place, it is in second place. Those cancer cases are caused by chemicals that are used in farms, asbestos in buildings like schools and hospitals, and large-scale farmers who use toxic chemicals. Any attempts by NEMA to take up this matter have been hindered by corruption. Cancer is very dangerous to the society and we have sung about it for a long time. Because we can now identify causes of cancer within our communities, it is high time that the departments and ministries involved came together to form a Government multi-agency that will study cancer and its causes, and make proper recommendations. Various comments, observations and recommendations will be made through this Petition. Therefore, as a House, we must continue monitoring the performance of these ministries in as far as cancer is concerned. Whenever it rains, asbestos emissions are swept away into rivers whose water is consumed by human beings and animals. It is a known fact. I urge the House to follow up on the first Petition by the Deputy Speaker and this Petition so that we come up with actionable recommendations. Coming up with petitions is okay, but we also need to implement their recommendations."
