"content": "go mourn and listen to them. In fact, if we care about this country, we should be joining the Gen Zs in the streets and fighting for their rights because we have failed. Mr. Speaker, Sir, people do not care. We just want to line our own pockets and appear as if we are important. We are not important; those people are the ones who have made us important. History has great men and women who non-violently walked. Gandhi and his supporters walked for 240 days until they won. In the United States of America (USA), Martin Luther King walked in the Great March. Today, we can see results. What stops us from doing so? We sit here and lie to ourselves that we can make a difference yet nowadays, we worship our party leaders and party lines. We cannot remember that the people are the ones who brought us here. Mr. Speaker, Sir, I plead with my colleagues that it is time that we join the citizens’ assemblies and ask ourselves whether we really understand the phrase that power is transient. We are acting as if we will be in these seats for the rest of our lives. What happened yesterday should be a wake-up call to the citizens of this country. We should all remember that we are here for a very short time. Mr. Speaker, Sir, what shocked me is what is this thing that pushes the President so much to want this Bill to be passed when blood is pouring out there. What is it? Sen. Chute, thank you for asking a very good question that all of us are asking. Instead of us fighting corruption; going after corrupt Cabinet Secretaries and governors, we are here trying to overtax citizens. About 70 per cent of the population of this country is Gen Zs. I am a Gen X and should be joining them out there to fight for these rights. It is a pity that we do not care because we are busy lining our own pockets. It is sad. I want to correct it out there. I proposed amendments to the Conflict of Interest Bill because it was barring the whole clan, the whole citizenry of Kenya, from doing business with the Government. It was amending legislation, which is already provided for. It was being engineered by the EACC so that they could find many loopholes for getting money. We say ‘ emala ’ in Maasai. You know, we have that gourd. When you decide to open that gourd, the insects go in when there are so many other avenues. We can easily do the right thing. This Parliament can check whether there is any conflict of interest. However, we should not punish every other citizen, for example, a step sister-in-law from doing business with the Government, which they were doing before I came. Mr. Speaker, Sir, as I conclude, my prayers are with the family of a young man, Erick Ayunishieni and all the departed Gen Zs. Your live will not go out in vain. The statements being propelled out there to feed certain interests are further from the truth. These young men and women were yesterday marching unarmed in the streets to fight for their rights. It is hard out there. This House is supposed to be a House of union that brings sanity. Even if we sit here and burn the midnight oil, there is nothing we can do. We are being spoken to, but it gets into the left ear and pops out of the right ear because sometimes we are being enticed.
