"content": "pursuant to the provisions of Standing Order 44(2)(c), I wish to request for a statement from the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security regarding the recent tragic attack on civilians along the Kenya-Ethiopia border in Marsabit County. On Monday, 12th August 2024, at approximately 2300 hours, a horrific incident occurred between Elle Dimtu and Forole along the Kenya-Ethiopia border in North Horr Constituency, Marsabit County. A group of unidentified gunmen ambushed a truck transporting food supplies from Nairobi to Dukana, resulting in the death of, at least, eight Kenyans and leaving one who sustained multiple and life-threatening injuries. The assailants set the truck ablaze, burning the bodies of the victims beyond recognition. Such acts of violence not only result in the loss of lives, but also disrupt livelihoods, destruction of property, and threaten the social norms of our communities. The potential of Marsabit County and its people cannot be realized under the shadow of insecurity. It is imperative that our approach to policing and security in this region evolves from being reactive to proactive and preventive. It is against this background that I request for a statement from the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security on the following: 1. A detailed account of the attack, including the current status of investigations, those who were involved and why; 2. Long-term security measures being implemented to prevent such incidents from recurring, including strategies for enhanced border surveillance and community policing; and, 3. Any assistance provided to the victims' families and the injured, as well as any plans for long-term support and compensation. Thank you."
