"content": "the limited available maize seeds stocks are not exported to safeguard seeds requirement in the year 2024. The maize seeds industry has initiated a rapid results initiative approach in pursuit of addressing the shortage. Under this approach, 37,500 acres of land are required for the maize seeds production. Kenya Seed Company has dedicated 33,000 acres of land for maize seeds production and meet the demand for the 2025 season. The Kenya Seed Company has been tasked to scout for land and advise the Government for facilitation. The Government is in the process of identifying suitable land that is held by the public institution for maize seeds production in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development and relevant stakeholders, to increase seed production from the current target of 27 million kilos to 49 million kilos in 2025. Due to low seed producer price, growers contracted pulled away from seeds production in 2022/2023. However, the Kenya Seed Company has reviewed upwards the contracted seeds growers’ prices to motivate them to allocate more land to maize seeds production in 2024. The Kenya Seed Company has increased and enhanced maize seeds varieties through targeted research as per the ecological zones. Finally, the Kenya Seed Company is working with the National Irrigation Authority to grow seeds in various suitable regions to increase production and enhance access to seeds. Thank you very much, Hon. Temporary Speaker."
