"content": "Madam Temporary Speaker, I wish to comment on the statement by the Senator for Nakuru. Compensation for victims of national disasters in this country is a big challenge. Disasters arise because of either landslides or floods. When floods or landslides occur, people lose lives or livestock or their property is destroyed. The Government responds, but they are forgotten immediately after. That is why the victims in Naivasha have not been compensated. It is unfortunate. Last month in Baringo County, we had landslides in two places. There is a place called Sirwa in Mogotio Constituency and others called Chebogel, Kasisit and Kapkombe. The Government moved quickly to help the families with some food, shelter and so on. However, there is no comprehensive programme on how they can be assisted. I want to appeal to our colleagues here. There is a law before the House on national disasters, which is being processed by my committee. The reason we have a challenge is because there is no clear law, policy or direction on how matters of natural disaster can be managed. It is important to take a position, as a House, so that victims can be compensated, especially where the Government has made declarations or clear statements that they will The electronic version of the Senate Hansard Report is for information purposes only.A certified version of this Report can be obtained from the Director, Hansard and Audio Services,Senate."
