"content": "Thank you, Madam Temporary Speaker. I rise to support the statement by the Nandi Senator, Sen. Cherarkey, on his concern on the reduction of tea bonus in some tea growing areas. It is not very good that our farmers plan for the income that they expect and then their tea bonus is reduced. When bonuses are paid, it has a ripple effect in our communities. There are farmers who have planned for their children’s school fees, among other benefits. The tea bonus really empowers the farmers in those areas. Madam Temporary Speaker, I compare this with the sugar growing zone that we have in Ndhiwa sub-county. In Ndiwa sub-county, we have only two industries; the sukari industry and the boda boda industry. Therefore, when the Sukari Industry cannot pay our farmers, as you walk in the vicinity, you can notice that our people are suffering. Around sukari industry in Ndhiwa, there is fear that our sugarcane is not being paid for because the sukari industry is keeping most of the sugarcane that has been crushed. The fear is that there are people who have imported a lot of sugar in this country and that is why our local sugar is not selling. Madam Temporary Speaker, over the labour report, I had hoped that there would be a mention of the outcry in the public sector in this country as we speak. Yesterday, the Cabinet Secretary of Public Service and Human Capital Development was here. I raised a question of what is the input of the Ministry as an overseer of the public sector, on the ongoing public sector challenges that ranges from the health sector. We have the intern doctors challenge that is not going away. We also have the issue of the lecturers on the streets. Consequently, if this cannot be sorted out by this Government, then it means that the education our children are getting The electronic version of the Senate Hansard Report is for information purposes only.A certified version of this Report can be obtained from the Director, Hansard and Audio Services,Senate."
