"content": "As my colleague, Mr. Ruto, has said, I do not think I have heard anybody who opposes the conservation of the Mau Forest. We support the move to conserve our forest. What we oppose is brutalizing people. We do not want houses being burnt the way it was done by the Government. Churches and schools which were licensed by the same Government were burnt down. It is a shame! We do not want to see that happen again. We are opposed to that in totality. The Government must listen to the voices of the people. We want to sit down and reason together. We want to know the guidelines so that we can collectively plant trees. What is the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife doing? It is doing nothing. The other day I received an invitation in my office to go to Kona Baridi to plant trees. Is that enough? How many trees have they planted this year? If we are serious, as a Government, we need to be truthful. We should say that we have planted 1,000 trees this year and next year we will plant 2,000 trees. What is the community doing? We should collectively plant trees and conserve forests? In any case, even Nairobi was forest land. If we want to evict people from forest land, let us start by evicting people from Nairobi. Windsor Golf Club was part of Karura Forest. Let us be honest. Why are we not talking about that? Is it because it is owned by a âbig manâ? Why are we talking about the poor people who were never allocated land? They sold their one-acre pieces of land wherever they were, to come and buy two-acre pieces of land and we want to chase them out. Why should we chase them out? Let us be honest. If you have five acres of land, why can you not have a forest under two acres? We should implement this in phases? However, it is a problem evicting 100,000 people. It is a problem. There will be a fight. Let us not shy away as leaders. We should not encourage the eviction of people, as a Government. People will fight and we do not want that to happen. We want demarcation of the forest, so that we can all be aware of it. We are opposed to the eviction of people from Mau Forest."
