"content": "The sugar industry plays a very significant role in the economic development of our country. It is the main economic activity in many parts of Nyanza, Western and parts of Rift Valley provinces. Approximately 250 small-scale farmers who supply approximately 90 per cent of the cane survive on the sugar sub-sector. An estimated six million people or approximately 16 per cent of the entire population, derive their livelihood directly or indirectly from the industry which is estimated to employ approximately 12,500 Kenyans in the sugar plantations and sugar factories. Domestic production saves the country approximately US$250 million, which is equivalent to Kshs20 billion in foreign exchange every year. Other benefits accruing from the industry are social amenities such as schools, roads, bridges as well as health facilities provided to communities by the various sugar companies."
