"content": "has improved from Kshs1.8 billion earned in 2005/2006 to Kshs2.3 billion in the 2006/2007 Financial Year. The small decline in the 2007/2008 Financial Year is because of the challenges that faced us last year. The gross turnover for the sugar industry increased marginally from Kshs24 billion in the 2005/2006 financial year to Kshs27 billion in the 2007/2008 Financial Year. It is noteworthy that the operating mills made profits after tax in the 2006/2007 Financial Year to date, compared to the previous years when Sony Sugar, Chemilil and Muhoroni Sugar companies in receivership recorded losses after tax. Despite massive investments over the years, sufficiency in sugar production in the country has remained elusive as consumption continues to out speed supply. In 2007, for instance, consumption was at 748,000 metric tonnes compared to production at 520 metric tones, leaving a deficit of approximately 227 metric tonnes. The installed capacity, that is, the crushing capacity is 24,400 tonnes per day against a potential of 47,000 tonnes per day. Kenya, unfortunately, has the highest sugar production cost in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Region at approximately US$600,000 per tonne."
