"content": "Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir, in the context of the consideration of the reforms of the IPU, the GC was informed of the recent IPU activities. In the field of development and efforts underway to start transforming them into a more comprehensive programme of activities, the council gave its general endorsement to the plans to establish a programme to mobilize parliamentarians on development issues, with special focus on such issues as attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and I am happy that the Speaker organized for a conference recently to discuss that. It also gave the endorsement on the reduction of child mortality and poor maternal health, the fight against HIV/AIDS and other pandemic diseases; poverty eradication or reduction, environmental sustainability and promotion of global partnership for development."
