"content": "Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, being cautious of time, I want to highlight one thorny subject. I will seek your permission to show the House the so called âpoisonous maizeâ. I will show you the sample of that maize and, if you allow me, Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, I will go ahead to describe what is bad about that maize. While waiting for your ruling on that issue, Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, I want to talk about something more serious â Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). I do not want to go into the science of GMOs, but all over the world and everywhere â left, right, north, south â no one talks good of GMOs! No scientific support has been given, except for one variety of maize. It has shown substantive increase in yields because of GMOs. But when you consider the damage on the B-Complex, the thiamineâs; things that form the blocks that build the human beingâs form - I want to put it that way. That is the foundation. Assume that they are impaired. What happens when those things are impaired and they are used in our physiology? We can say very clearly here that, in five to 15 years time, just like the people of Hiroshima, expect mutants! We should expect to have human beings with serious deformities! Is it worth all that trouble? All the contracts by this Government were for non-GMOs, because they realized that - and I thank the Government for that - they did not want to import GMOs. That is because the rules, including the Biosafety Act that we passed last year, are very clear! Section 52 of that law provides very heavy penalties of up to ten years imprisonment and a Kshs20 million fine if you infringe that particular law. We passed it here in this House."
