(a) No, there has been no public inquiry about the conduct of the British administration in Kenya during the 1950s emergency period, particularly with regard to torture and human rights abuses. After Kenya attained Independence in 1963, the founding fathers of our nation followed a policy of reconciliation and nation building. Hon. Members will remember that our founding father said that we should forgive, but not forget. That was done. At that time, the Kenyan leadership did not intend to open old wounds, which had been inflicted during the colonial period. A commission of inquiry, therefore, was considered to be unnecessary."
