"content": "I would like to talk about the registration of farmers as it is now. Every farmer is supposed to register with the factory he or she sells the tea. However, that registration has been abused to confine farmers to a point where they are not allowed to make decisions. The purpose of registration, in my view, was meant to give information to the Government as to how much acreage of tea we have in the country. It was not to be used to stop farmers from selling tea where they liked. That goes against the liberalization spirit. So, we should make the necessary legal changes to the Tea Act. The role of registration of farmers should be strictly left to the Tea Board of Kenya, and not to the tea factories as it is now. There is also a problem with the branding of our tea. Tea is taken from our factories to Mombasa in bulk. It is then mixed and sold without any brand name. Of course, we know that any product that is sold with its brand earns up to five to six times more than un-branded products. So, that is an area where we need to make some changes to allow individual factories to independently look for their markets and, if possible, sell their tea with their labels."
