"content": "become dilapidated. Trees have been cut down. We have here the \"master\" of environmental conservation, Prof. Maathai, who can bear me witness that we are heading towards a semi-desert in the tea-growing areas, just because the environment has been reduced to nothing, because people cut down trees and use them for treating tea in factories. So, the Government should come in since tea is a commodity which earns the country a lot of foreign exchange. I wonder what the Government has been doing and what returns it gives to the farmer. The foreign exchange that comes into the country is not being used for the development of the tea sector. It is being used in all the sectors of the economy, including education and health. The Government should invest in tea development with a view to protecting this hen which lays the golden egg. So, it is now time for the Government to invest in the tea sector, not only in terms of development of factories but also in terms of infrastructural development in tea-growing areas."
