"content": " Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, I beg to reply. (a) I am aware that the water hyacinth has invaded wetlands, streams and other small water bodies, thus threatening their survival. (b) I am further aware that the weed has also invaded some irrigated lands in western Kenya, making it expensive to till the fields. (c) My Ministry is already taking measures aimed at ensuring that the spread of water hyacinth is brought under control by use of beetles, which is one of the most effective control methods. The Lake Victoria Environmental Management Project (LVEMP) managed to control about 95 per cent of the water hyacinth by December, 2005 from over 17,000 hectares to less than 500 hectares, but there has been some resurgence due to cessation of funding of the project."
