"content": " Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, may I apologise on behalf of the Minister for Environment and Natural Resources who is indisposed. However, I beg to reply. (a) The total area of land in hectares in gazetted forests that has remained fallow after logging of plantation trees in the country is 19,000 hectares. This area has been decreasing gradually as we have a tree planting programme for 7,000 hectares annually implemented by the Government and other stakeholders. (b) The Government and other stakeholders jointly replant 7,000 hectares of forest plantation annually. This is determined by the resources available out of the working annual budgetary allocations and donations from stakeholders. If more resources were made available, the fallow areas would be replanted fully in two years. (c) A total of 27,290 hectares of over-mature plantation and 11,500 hectares of mature plantation still exist in the gazetted forests in Kenya today. The other area 62,209 hectares is composed of young plantations of varying ages. The harvesting rate today stands at about 2,500 hectares annually. Tree plantations over 22 years of age are considered as being mature while those over 30 years of age are considered as being over-mature."
