"content": "Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, at the outset, I want to erase the erroneous impression that the sugar industry in Kenya is going to collapse next year, or the year after. For the last three years, we have been more competitive than ever before. The net effect of that is that this year, instead of 200,000 metric tonnes of sugar getting into Kenya, there is a threat that our sugar is getting cheaper. The net outflow is going to be exportation of the said commodity. Nonetheless, we have a number of challenges in the industry. One is the need for us to improve our domestic production, so as to cope with the demand that is likely to escalate to one million metric tonnes in the next four years. We have put measures in place to address the said challenges for the purposes of allowing the sugar subsector to be more profitable."
