"content": "Mr. Speaker, Sir, as I said, Mombasa is a tourism hub. We all remember what happened at the coast in 1997 when we had similar violence and Mombasa and the entire tourist circuit was turned into a ghost region. We would not want to repeat that because we know how much it has taken the people of the Coast and the people of Kenya to reinvent Mombasa and make it the tourist hub that it has become. Jobs have been created and investments have been increasingly in Mombasa. The value of property has been going up; if we have this violence there, we might start seeing our tourists relocating to other places; once we lose a season, we could as well lose the entire season. We are also looking at a time when we are celebrating the success of our soldiers in Somalia, which has reduced the incidence of piracy within the East African coast and the Indian Ocean. This has resulted in increasing business within our ports. Our Port of Mombasa is increasing its business turnover at an amazing 19 per cent. It is, perhaps, the only port in the world that has that volume of business. This is going to be threatened by people feeling that they cannot transit through Mombasa; that could shift business to our neighbours, who are always competing for the same."
