The fall of the Barre regime in Somalia, the collapse of the state system in that country and its reinstatement by various militias led to Kenya and Ethiopia bearing the brunt of the problems which arose from the absence of a government in Somalia. This included attacks and destabilization by extremist militia forces, which both countries have had to counter as effectively as they could.
