"content": "On the Presidential Speech, I want to state clearly that it was one of the best and most creative speeches that have ever been made in this Parliament. It was quite moving, bold and to the point. Hon. Deputy Speaker, Sir, I would also like to thank the people of Lagdera for electing me to this House and for having confidence in me. I want to touch on two crucial issues, starting with food security. Kenya is the third largest recipient of relief food in the world, after North Korea and Ethiopia. This fact shows clearly that something is wrong with our country. Right now, we have a lot of rain. There is too much flooding. However, in the next one or two years, you will hear about drought and subsequently, famine. That is as a result of lack of planning. When you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Those are the things that affect our country. Hon. Members will realise that Kenya has one of the best agricultural lands. Somebody once said that Kenyaâs soil was so fertile that if you put your hand in it, your finger might grow. Hon. Deputy Speaker, you cannot call yourself a proud country when you are begging for food. Fifty years down the road, we are still suffering. We are still begging for food, we are still unable to reach our villages by road, and our people are wondering whether we are truly independent. Independence is characterised by a countryâs ability to feed her people. This country has suffered from what may be called âshort-termismâ. Short-termism is an enemy of development. We have good policy papers, ideas and agenda but nothing is being implemented. When your people beg for food and you are exporting, you are doing zero work."
