    "content": "Many studies have been done on the problems affecting farmers and pastolists. Researchers have come up with many suggestions, but we have not used them to see how we can tame that conflict. That is what we have found out in Tana River. So many studies have been undertaken on how pastoralists and agriculturists can be helped to earn their living in the way they know best. We have the Kenya Leather Authority, but I do not think there is a pastoralist who sits on its Board. I do not know how the people who constituted the Board left out the people who know best what an animal skin is used for. We get shoes from an animal skin and, for some of us, the animal skin is our mattress. I know that 70 per cent of the land mass in this country is occupied by pastoralists. In our childhood, some of us did not know what a mattress was. The animal skin was our mattress."
