"content": "In this respect, the deportation was lawful and carried out in the best interest of Kenya. When the Kenya High Commission in Abuja was appraised of the situation, the High Commissioner initiated talks with the Nigerian Government authorities at various levels. The High Commissioner outlined the unique circumstances that warranted the removal of the three Nigerian nationals from Kenya, emphasizing the very serious nature of their criminal offences. He also explained that when the Kenya authorities tried to remove the three persons by traditional means, the trio became very violent and that necessitated the use of non-traditional means, hence the use of the chartered aircraft. During those meetings, the High Commissioner was informed that the Nigerian officials had no problem with the deportees per se. But they insisted that due process was not followed and the Nigeria High Commission in Nairobi was not involved in the whole deportation process as the receiving State. The deportees lacked appropriate travel documents issued by the Nigerian authorities, meaning they had no status in their own country. The Government wishes to confirm that the Kenyan officials and the crew of the charted aircraft were treated well and the High Commissioner maintained regular contact with them. In addition, the officials and the crew were not held in captivity, but were residing in a hotel where they were free to move around within Lagos, awaiting formal clearance to travel back. Consultations went on at the highest level and I can confirm that the seven Kenyan Government officials, the five flight crew members and the charted plane have been released."
