"content": "dangerous precedents. Hon. Senators will go to committees - if we approve this Motion - hon. Senators - it is said in Kiswahili, ukiona kichwa cha mwenzako chanyolewa tiachako maji – it cuts both ways. I want to urge hon. Senators that much sooner than later, the degree of intolerance being exhibited by the leadership of the Majority will visit on any one of you. You will be told to vote in a certain way, your conscience will not allow you to vote in the way you are being herded to vote; the next day there will be a Motion here against you. Hon. Senators, let me tell you for free, there was a Prime Minister in Pakistan called Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, when he was Prime Minister, a law was brought before Parliament to allow Queens Counsel from the United Kingdom to practice law and represent clients in Pakistan. The law was passed by the House, he vetoed it as a Prime Minister. Four years down the line, he was overthrown by a man called Zia-ul-Haq. No lawyer in Pakistan was ready to defend Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He invited two Queens Counsel from London to defend him; he was shown the law he vetoed and he was told:”From the stroke of your pen, you barred those lawyers from coming to defend you.” He was taken to court, charged, tried, convicted and hanged. So when we do things, it is important to know that the knives we sharpen today are the same ones that will slice us tomorrow. When the shoe is on the other foot, you never feel how that foot feels. But when it gets to your foot, you eventually have to feel it. Mr. Speaker, Sir, I want to urge this House that this not a partisan Motion. This is a Motion that touches on the very core operation of hon. Senators, whether you are going to operate as elected and nominated hon. Senators coming here with a brain, a conscience and a right to do what is good for the country or to be pigeon holed into supporting the unsupportable issues that parties may bring on this Floor, mine included. It is only by taking that approach that we will see the import of this Motion. We will also see the danger of passing an instrument of terror at the very nursing stages of this Senate."
