"content": "we get appointments in high positions and we tend to forget that the people who elected us and who are expecting services are not in Nairobi. They are in the rural areas. Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, here, we are flushing toilets, we have electricity, we also have money and financial stability to go to a pharmacy and buy any medicine; we have doctors on call and we also have the money to go and choose the fruits we want to eat. If the Government takes this initiative and truly gives refrigeration machines in every county or in every region; avails funds that will purchase the same and store it there, when Del Monte are not in a position to have stocks of fruits to make their products, they can go and buy from these regions. By doing this, we would have empowered farmers; and by empowering farmers, you have empowered the whole nation. Why is that? Because fertilizers will be purchased; the sellers, who are registered business people will pay taxes to the Government; agricultural chemicals will be purchased, businessmen will make money and as a result, they will contribute to the national kitty in terms of taxation. So, you will find that by actually investing that little money there with the farmers, you have tripled the income to the Government. So, Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, it is my kind and sincere request to the Government that we should move from that habit of saying “the Government, the officers; the Government, the cars; the Government, the high facilitation that is given” and go back to the basics and say “address the needs of the farmers.” Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, if the two Motions I have brought here will be taken seriously; one with regard to coffee and tea and this one concerning fruits, we will have catered for about 30 per cent of the tax collections in this country. This year, we are expected to collect Kshs1.2 trillion. If we were to also target these fruits, we would have Kshs3.2 trillion and that money would trickle down to wananchi ."
