The only person involved in logging in this forest is Mr. Morris Ochoki of Moris Ochoki Sawmill. Mr. Speaker, Sir, the number of trees that have been cut so far is as tabulated below. I will table the list and I have given a copy to the questioner. When it was realized that the wood production from Kenya’s indigenous forests could not sustain the demand of industrial wood, the then colonial Government introduced a policy that encouraged the establishment of industrial/exotic tree plantation in 1907. The policy has been improved, especially with the enactment of the Forest Act of 2005 to enable the plantations be sustainably managed for a specific purpose; being harvested and utilized to supply the Kenyan society with wood based products as and when they mature. Under the policy, the harvesting is done by prequalified firms or individuals in each county who are selected through a competitive tendering process of bidding. A list of prequalified firms in Makueni is hereby attached and I will table it at the end of the reply. Lastly, there is no environmental impact assessment report that has been submitted to the National Environment Management Authority nor is there any environmental impact assessment licence or authorization issued by the authority for logging in the above mentioned forest. I also wish to reiterate that the Ministry of The electronic version of the Senate Hansard Report is for information purposes only. A certified version of this Report can be obtained from the Hansard Editor, Senate"
