Deputy Speaker, pursuant to Standing Order No.44(2)(c), I would like to request for a Statement from the Chairperson of the Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Co-operatives regarding the expected 2013 grain harvest, and the current and the projected Strategic Grains Reserve stocks in the country. The Chairperson should inquire into and report on the following:- (i) the acreage put under maize and wheat in 2013 and the expected production; (ii) the factors that may influence the overall production, particularly timely availability of agricultural inputs and incidents of maize lethal necrosis disease; (iii) the contingency plans that have been put in place to import the shortfall, in case there is an expected shortfall in production; (iv) the amount of money budgeted for by the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) to purchase the 2013 crop, and the amount of money that farmers will be paid for each bag of maize and wheat delivered to the NCPB; (v) how successful the programme introduced by the Government last year to offer storage facilities for farmers’ grains at NCPB stores was; and, The electronic version of the Official Hansard Report is for information purposesonly.
