"content": "With regard to social corporate responsibility, some international companies come over and do, say, a small road and a health centre. They then call this social corporate responsibility. In my county, Elgeyo Marakwet, the Tullow Oil Company is exploring petroleum in Keiyo Valley. We have had several meetings to resolve conflicts. The Tullow Oil Company gave out scholarship worth Kshs1 million for four constituencies. That is like targeting five students in every constituency. This is an average of Kshs100,000. They are then expected to go away with the whole resource. This Bill is important because it involves the communities that live in the area where the exploration is being carried out. We have seen communities demonstrating. The other week we saw Turkanas demonstrating in the streets. Even for small jobs, the miners or the companies import workers from either from Voi or Nairobi. In terms of even supplying meat, they also contract foreign suppliers and yet we know Turkanas have so many cows. They get meat from Nairobi from their own relatives or friends. This is going to address such community grievances."
