"content": "The interesting part of military life is that young stars join at the age of 18, 19 or 20 years and they slog it out throughout their lives until maybe they are in their 50s and that is when they depart. That is a life of individuals spent together. Currently, the responsibility of looking after the military welfare has been left to the KDF structure and the goodwill of the National Assembly. I believe through this Bill, the welfare of individuals and immediate family members will be anchored in law. Also, through this Bill, what we are likely to achieve is what we have been asking from all our uniformed members of different services; loyalty, patriotism and commitment to national service. Many individuals may leave the service on wheelchairs, others bedridden, wounded in action, accident victims and all that. There are also people who when they leave the service because of job hazards, maybe they lose their hearing or they are visually impaired. If we do not have a structure that is going to give them a life, then I think we may be asking a lot from individuals today but tomorrow we may not expect much from them as human beings."
