"content": "(iii) The sheep are sheered early before reaching maturity and this lowers the quality and quantity of the wool; (iv) over-stocking is very common in Marakwet, and this has contributed to the poor nutrition for the animals; this eventually lowers the quality of the wool. (c) To ensure wool farmers in this country, including those in Marakwet District, benefit from wool production, the Ministry of Livestock Development has put in place the following interventions: (i) It has established nine sheep and goat stations across the country. Two of them, namely the Naivasha and Marindas in Molo, are used for breeding quality wool sheep for sale to farmers in order to improve their flock across the country. In 2006, Marindas Sheep Research Station and goat station sold seven breeding rams to Labot Sheep Multiplication Centre in Marakwet to improve their herds. (ii) The Ministry has deployed a Livestock Production Officer to this station in Marakwet to assist wool farmers on the technical aspect. (iii)The Ministry, in collaboration with KIRDI, is conducting a survey of all the wool producing districts in the country to establish the actual population of wool sheep, the level of production and the challenges the farmers are experiencing in order to address them. (iv) Through the National Agricultural and Livestock Extension Programme, farmers are being sensitized on the consequences of in-breeding. They are also being trained on the best routine management practices aimed at improving wool production. These include deworming, feeding and the housing of the sheep. (v) Farmers are also advised to sheer their sheep when they are at least 18 months of age in order to get mature wool."
