"content": "The COMESA safeguards have already elapsed. They elapsed on 28th February, 2015. That was the last extension the Kenya Government was given. What does that mean? It means that the sugar buyers in our country and the companies that deal with sugar will no longer be restricted to buy from our own companies. That Mumias, Nzoia and Muhoroni sugar companies will compete with Kenana Sugar Company of Sudan. They will compete with sugar from Brazil. If ordinary Kenyans find a two kilogramme packet of sugar from Brazil selling at Kshs60 and sugar from Nzoia, Mumias and Chemelil selling for Kshs120 in our supermarkets, we have a liberalized economy and they will buy the Brazilian sugar."
