"content": "Similarly, we want a very vibrant private sector of the sugar companies. Let us not be very protective. All of us are in this House to make sure that more money gets into the pockets of our people. Our farmers toil day and night. They wake up at 6.00 a.m. They buy fertilizers. They send their children to school but, at the end of the day, roads in the sugar belt region continue to be so bad that farmers lose a lot of cane on those bad roads. By the time the farmer gets to the factory, 40 per cent of the cane he harvested is lost. It is the responsibility of Members of Parliament to make sure that the seven or six sugar factories in Western Kenya, Nyanza and Coast regions are of the same standard as factories in our competitor-countries like Zimbabwe, Malawi and Swaziland. The COMESA safeguards are already gone. Nobody is going to save us. Due to the poor state of our sugar companies, they are unable to compete with imports. We can confirm that sugar produced by our sugar companies cannot compete with imports."
