"content": "Thank you, hon. Speaker, for giving me the chance to contribute to this Motion. At the very onset, I am a believer in the role of the private sector in production and development in general. I believe that there should be less Government in production and more of the private sector in production. If we privatized our sugar mills in this country, we will make them more efficient. That would enable them to expand their capacities and diversity their production base. We would make them use more sucrose content varieties and generally improve their efficiency to levels which we can realise in this region. In Kenya, for example, we produce sugar at a cost of about US$600 per metric tonne. Countries like Zambia and Sudan do it at about US$350 per metric tonne. This means that we are a high cost producer of sugar. If we want to match the countries that I have mentioned, let alone countries like Brazil and Venezuela, then we must inject private capital in our public owned mills."
